Why shouldn’t you use AI to write content? We asked AI…

A few years ago, it would have gone without saying that PR content was being written by people, but as AI has developed apace we want to make our position clear… We do not use AI to write the press releases, social media content, awards entries, video scripts or anything else we produce for clients.

We can see why it’s tempting if you lack a team of experienced journalists like ours.

After all, do you remember the first time you typed a request or a question into an AI chatbot such as ChatGPT? A second later, up popped what looked like a considered and intelligent response that really felt as though it could have been generated by a human brain. Incredible and astonishing technology.

So why don’t we do that?

Ironically enough, to find the answer you could do worse than to ask AI itself. For fun, we thought we would ask ChatGPT why you shouldn’t use AI for written content. It wasn’t offended by our enquiry, thought about it for half a second, and cracked on with generating a response. Its top answer was lack of original thought and genuine insight. Good point ChatGPT!

The fact is that however well AI can replicate something that resembles human thought, it is not human thought. It generates its responses from pre-existing material by putting words in a suitable order but without understanding those words, it is not human and cannot think.

Our editorial team, who between them have more than 100 years of journalistic experience, bring not just writing skill, but genuine human insight, life experience and originality to the content they produce. And once the piece of writing is drafted, it is thoughtfully proofed and checked, not just to make sure it is grammatically and factually correct, but to ensure the tone, the angle, and the detail are perfect for the client and for the audiences we are targeting.

An AI bot doesn’t do that.

By creating bespoke content for our clients, there is no danger that it has plagiarised anyone else’s material and we know that everything we write is based on accurate and up-to-date information.

Plus, the more prevalent AI material becomes, the easier it is to spot.

The journalists and editors we build relationships with want genuine and original content for their media outlets, not bland, generic material that anyone can generate at the drop of a hat. And we know that they are excellent at spotting an AI press release as soon as it lands in their inbox.

Not a problem for us, because every word we write is generated by authentic intelligence, not artificial intelligence.
